Reminder Regarding Alumni Involvement with Active Chapters

Alumni, Life, and Honorary Brothers of Kappa Kappa Psi,

In response to the findings of a recent investigation, the National Council of Kappa Kappa Psi has instituted an indefinite ban on all Alumni and Life Members of the Theta Lambda chapter from participating in that Chapter’s events, ceremonies, or activities without the written permission of the University of Memphis Director of Bands or Theta Lambda Chapter Sponsor. This ban, imposed at the request of the University of Memphis Director of Bands, prohibits the Alumni and Life Members of this chapter from attendance and/or participation at any Theta Lambda Chapter functions, including Rituals, social activities, and Membership Education activities. Alumni from other chapters are strongly encouraged to obtain written permission from the University of Memphis Director of Bands or Theta Lambda Chapter Sponsor prior to attending or participating in any Theta Lambda Chapter events.

Actions such as this ban are not imposed by the National Council without careful deliberation, and are undertaken as a response to inappropriate involvement by alumni brothers in active chapters’ activities and functions. As Alumni, Life, and Honorary Brothers of our Fraternity, we are afforded the opportunity to continue our involvement with Kappa Kappa Psi. However, this role also requires us to be mindful of how we interact with Active Brothers and Chapters. The Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Alumni Handbook (available at https://kkpsiaa.kkytbsonline.com/…/KKPsiAA-AlumniHandbook17…) provides guidance regarding alumni involvement with Active Chapters. In summary:

  • Alumni Brothers are welcome to attend publicly announced Chapter events, such as rituals and anniversary events.
  • Alumni Brothers are welcome to attend Chapter events that are not publicly announced, such as regular meetings, if specifically invited to an event by the Chapter.
  • Chapters retain discretion about alumni attendance and participation at their chapter events.
  • A Chapter may decline to invite an alumni brother to an event, even if it has extended such an invitation to one or more other Alumni Brothers.
  • If a Chapter asks an alumni brother to leave an event, the Alumni Brother must respect that Chapter’s decision and depart.

If you are uncertain about how to remain engaged as an Alumni, Life, or Honorary Brother of Kappa Kappa Psi, please reach out to any of the members of the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Board of Directors (as listed at https://kkpsiaa.kkytbsonline.com/board-of-directors). We are available to discuss how you can continue to make worthwhile contributions to our fraternity and its goals through ongoing musicianship, participation in Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association programs, membership in one or more of our local alumni associations, and other avenues for meaningful collaboration. Because our fraternity is fortunate to have a strong group of dedicated alumni brothers, the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Board of Directors can also direct you to other alumni, life, and honorary brothers who can offer additional insights based on their personal experience.

Kappa Kappa Psi is stronger because our Alumni, Life, and Honorary Brothers are passionate about their ongoing commitment to our fraternity. By taking steps to ensure appropriate involvement with Active Brothers and Chapters, we can pursue our shared goal to “Strive for the Highest.”

AEA,

The Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Board of Directors

2017-2019 Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Goals and Action Items

Dear Brothers of the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association,

We are very pleased to share with you our goals and action items for the 2017-2019 Biennium. During the 2017 National Convention in Orlando, the incoming and outgoing members of the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Board of Directors worked together to set forth a series of goals that would guide our continuing initiatives as our organization develops and grows. With the passing of our new KKPsi Alumni Association Constitution, this board has dedicated itself to increasing our transparency and fostering engagement among our membership.

Toward that end, we invite you to look over our Goals and Action Items, which can be found below.

We look forward to hearing your feedback and remain incredibly excited to continue our work collaboratively designing a future for the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association.

AEA,

Congratulations to Jennifer Costello, the Recipient of the 2017 Scott Stowell Alumni Excellence Award!

Named for Past National President Scott Stowell, the Scott Stowell Alumni Excellence Award was designed to recognize those alumni of Kappa Kappa Psi who continue to serve our fraternity through their devotion of time, energy, and spirit while volunteering as advisors, mentors, and role models, their professional advice and networking support to other members of our fraternity, and their encouragement of active brothers toward greater participation and growth in band programs and as members of Kappa Kappa Psi.  The service of these outstanding Brothers has often been unsung and overlooked, a situation that the Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association seeks to remedy.

Awarded once each biennium, with recognition made at the National Convention of the Fraternity, previous recipients of the award are Michael Napolitano (2013, Kappa Upsilon) and Michelle Turenne (2015, Eta Omicron).

The Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Board of Directors is pleased to recognize Jennifer Costello of the Alpha Omega Chapter as the 2017 recipient of the Scott Stowell Alumni Excellence Award for her ongoing support and dedication.  We would like to share the following from the Alpha Omega chapter:

She serves as the volunteer videographer for the University of Pittsburgh Varsity Marching Band and as a mentor, advisor, and friend to the Alpha Omega chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi.  She is unbelievably kind and helpful to everyone that she meets and helps to create a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere for all members, new and old . . . .  Jen is the most dedicated, selfless, and caring alumni from the Alpha Omega chapter.  She truly embodies the pillars of the fraternity: musicianship, leadership, service, and brotherhood.  Her sense of fellowship and love for the fraternity is more than just “l love you,” it’s “no matter what.”

The Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association would also like to congratulate the other Scott Stowell Alumni Excellence Award nominees for 2017.  Your ongoing service to the Fraternity continues to be an inspiration:

  • Marc Bowers – Life Member, Beta Sigma (University of Houston)
  • Christopher Carpenter – Life Member, Omicron (West Virginia University)
  • Jennifer Costello – Life Member, Alpha Omega (University of Pittsburgh)
  • Dan Everard – Life Member, Eta Omicron (James Madison University)
  • Sarah Lambert Fitzgerald – Life Member, Iota Delta (Towson University)
  • Kelly Hooper Miller – Life Member, Omicron (West Virginia University)
  • Edward Savoy – Life Member, Eta Alpha / Eta Omicron (Lock Haven University / James Madison University)
  • Dr. Jessica Finlay-Schultz – Alumni Member, Alpha Iota (University of Colorado)

Finally, we would like to thank our selection committee for their work on the difficult task of choosing a single recipient.  Brent Cannon, KKPsiAA Outreach and Recognition Director, was assisted by Alexis Howell (Iota Pi), Daniel Ross (Iota), Carissa Vinovskis (Epsilon Omega), Reggie Wallace (Eta Gamma), and Michelle Wedster (Eta Delta).

AEA,

The Kappa Kappa Psi Alumni Association Board of Directors
